The Story
Money. Motive. Murder.
The wire transfer cleared at 11:47 p.m.—four minutes before the audit window opened, which was either impeccable timing or the kind of luck that only looks like luck.
Lex Vaughn spent her career at the IRS reading the paper trail other people hoped no one would read. Now she works privately, from an A-frame in the mountains, with Ledger the half-wolf at her feet and Debit the cat on the desk. Related-party transactions. Beneficial ownership concealment. An audit opinion that should never have been signed.
The numbers reconcile. The motive does not.
Read Chapter One
On the third Tuesday in March, the wire posted twice.
The first transfer was routine—a quarterly distribution from a Delaware LLC to a BVI holding company, the kind of related-party transaction the audit team had been signing off on for six years. The second was the same wire. Same amount, same routing, three minutes later. By the time the reconciliation flagged it, the originating account had been closed.
What follows is what the wire transfer documentation actually shows.
